Why Los Blancos Have 'Total Trust' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch
When an teenage makes club history in a crucial European match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.
In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the 15-time European champions claimed a three-nil round of 16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.
The young player, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English Premier League side in Tuesday's return to secure a quarter-final berth.
Aged 18 years old, Pitarch was the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.
A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy
This talent is the most recent to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most exciting young players.
He signed for Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a positive impact.
He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and drive he brought to the team.
'His Best Attribute Is His Personality'
In the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the first team and awarded him minutes in pre-season.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Manchester City.
"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the very first time I began playing the game, each day you go to train and every day you play a match," stated Pitarch after his debut.
"I have just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."
Given a first start in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opportunity.
The teenager has taken it with performances that have belied his age and experience.
"He's a very quick player, and you can observe his capabilities," remarked the coach. "He's incredibly energetic, with great stamina, effort and movement."
Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.
"His greatest quality is his personality," added he. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.
"I realize people are surprised to see him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to do his normal game.
"He will keep receiving chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to have a player like him."
A Future International Decision
Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's famous youth academy.
He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the option to represent either country at senior international level.
Under Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a official senior international match.
He has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the under-19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.
Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either senior national team, who are watching his rise with keen attention.
In a recent interview, the player said: "I haven't made my final decision yet. Things are positive with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a conclusion soon."
His situation mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine chose La Roja, Brahim opted to represent Morocco.
Focus on the Future
For now, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and rewarding his manager's belief.
He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one win at City, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.
He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in younger players to aid the club pursue trophies to come.
Following his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is tipped to play a key role in that.
"The manager handles me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to think about it excessively - I must deserve my minutes on the field," he said following the success at Etihad Stadium.
