The White House disclosed the initiation of government employee layoffs on Friday, following through on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

Russell Vought posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s process for terminating staff.

Although Vought did not specify which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that notices had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that layoffs would take place at the CISA. Also, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services used by the public and vowed to challenge the actions in court.

“It is disgraceful that the government has used the funding lapse as an pretext to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who provide critical services to the public across the country,” stated a national union president, who leads the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO responded to the news, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have refused to vote for a GOP-supported legislation to reopen the government unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the standoff is not expected to be ended before then.
