What We Know Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
A minimum of 16 individuals perished and in excess of 40 were wounded when attackers shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have called a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, officials have stated the death toll is 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were taken to medical facilities.
Those who died are yet to be officially identified, but police believe their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.
Below are the victims who have been identified so far.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Described as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She described the moments before the attack, stating they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.
One Child
A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain under care, with five in a critical state. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he heard “a large number” of shots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
