Vince Gilligan Discloses He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Will Conclude... For Now.

The creative mastermind could not have predicted that Pluribus would become a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

With the first season of the acclaimed sci-fi show wrapping up—and a second season officially in the works—the creative team recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus.

About the Incredible Audience Reaction

It would be easy to get distracted by the constant speculation and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.

“It's like being constantly eating your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it from others, and that's on purpose. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”

In spite of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by online forums.”

“Better to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.

A Pressing Query: Will the showrunner Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?

Given that Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by public opinion, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… in a way.

“There are some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to abandon a good idea for a superior concept. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

Then again, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.

“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Of course, why not reference the legendary finales?

“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV.
