A large-scale search and rescue mission is actively under way in the Caribbean waters for two unlocated sailboats carrying humanitarian supplies traveling from Mexico to Cuba.

Military Search Operations Launched

Authorities in Mexico has sent naval teams and military search aircraft to locate the two vessels, which were carrying no fewer than nine sailors, per a military release.

The boats had been scheduled to reach Cuba's capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and no confirmation of their arrival, the navy said.

Context of Humanitarian Support to the Nation

The Caribbean nation has depended significantly on aid convoys from Mexico over recent weeks, as the country struggles through repeated power outages across the country.

"Both crews and captains are experienced sailors, and both vessels are equipped with proper navigational gear and signalling equipment," an official associated with the mission commented.

The nine individuals on board are citizens of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexico said it has established contact with rescue coordination centers from the involved countries along with their consular staff.

"The group is co-operating fully with the authorities and remain confident in the ability of the crews to reach Havana safely," the official further stated.

Previous Aid Shipment

Previously that week, the government in Havana publicly celebrated and officially received a different ship that had transported 14 tonnes of relief supplies to the island.

That boat, called "Granma 2.0" after the vessel in which Castro landed in Cuba to begin the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, delivered solar equipment, drugs, infant formula, cycles and foodstuffs.

Wider Geopolitical Context

Charity groups and individuals have primarily led initiatives to bring critical assistance to Cuba since January, a period which saw a energy blockade on the Communist-run nation began.

The United Nations have since highlighted ""severe" lack of essential goods, with over fifty thousand surgical procedures cancelled in Cuba because of electricity supply constraints.

Political measures have increased lately, with statements from various representatives highlighting the delicate situation regarding bilateral relations.

Reacting to recent proposals, a high-ranking official from Cuba declared that "the governance model of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Accounts suggest that initial phases of negotiations were initiated, although their ongoing development remains uncertain.

The maritime authorities affirmed it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its command to locate the boats and secure the well-being of the people on board.

At this time, there has been silence on the lost ships by the government in Havana.
