Thrice-crowned National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player Jokic suffered a "heartbreaking" knee injury while the Nuggets lost 147-123 against the Miami Heat.

Jokic was hurt in the latter stages of the opening half following an inadvertent contact with team-mate Jones.

Jones stepped on the footwear of the big man, who promptly fell to the ground grabbing his knee.

The 30-year-old, who is leading the NBA this season in boards and dimes, posted 21 points and eight assists in the game before incurring the problem.

The player will undergo an scan on Tuesday to evaluate the severity of the injury.

"Right away, he understood he was hurt," commented Denver coach Adelman.

"Injuries are part of the game. Whoever who gets hurt, it's tough to see, especially somebody as special as he is. More information will come on Tuesday."

"We'll move on together. Clearly, at this moment, I am focused about Jokic as a person and the letdown of facing a situation like that."
