The Red Devils Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants

Manchester United are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Acquisition for United

The forward, with half a year remaining on her contract, is known as a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing will be seen as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League team.

Departure from Bayern has been anticipated since she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading forwards. According to reports, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.

Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen the Attack

The experienced striker's signing should represent a major uplift to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been highly consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford

The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when United seem to be building positive momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought additional activity:

  1. The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.

On Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure stated: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
