The network's Premier New Show of This Year Secures a Substantial Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
During the fall season, Adult Swim welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, evoking a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often marked by bleakness, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and supported its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about watching this endearing family navigate their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing cynical streak. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Future Seasons
Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well be part of that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to bask in the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
