Within the expansive world of streaming, many series fail to make an impact. Originally, Boots seemed destined to slip by unnoticed. But, due to overwhelmingly positive reviews plus strong word-of-mouth, the show has quickly ascended to emerge as a leading show on the platform.

Introducing Boots?

The show is based on a former marine’s 2015 memoir titled The Pink Marine. It follows his experience in the armed forces during the early 90s. This was prior to the widely debated Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell became the standard for LGBTQ+ personnel.

This theme holds significant potential, as demonstrated by prior shows which have addressed related issues. Audiences clearly held big anticipations for Boots.

What Works Well

As the show zooms in on its central theme, it rises to exceptionally compelling storytelling. Cameron Cope, a new recruit seeking escape, enlists almost as an act of rebellion.

However, the standout of the show lies in the NCO role, an accomplished NCO whose reputation is at risk by an investigation into his sexuality. His acting is extraordinary: controlled and seething, except when situations uncover his inner turmoil.

This aspect of the series deserves all the acclaim it gets. How it manages to convey social commentary with emotional depth is incredibly moving. It’s hard to view without experiencing strong frustration and scorn regarding the prejudice faced by those who serve.

Where It Falters

The catch is that this serious theme forms only part of Boots. Other segments appear to romanticize army culture in a way that it is comparable to promotional material.

Although there are scenes reminiscent of classic war dramas, these are often diminished through sappy dialogue and simplistic depictions. Conflicts get settled in strangely silly fashions, including a messy confrontation reminiscent of a musical comedy.

A Show at Odds with Itself

The biggest problem in the series is that its serious and indignant moments are diluted by an attempt to copy the style of popular series.

While Boots continues, it turns into largely a group story centered around a misfit becoming part of a community inside a rigid military structure. The show uses past episodes to develop its characters, however these can feel redundant and poorly integrated.

Conclusion

The series is two very different programs battling for focus. On one hand, it delivers a searing condemnation of discrimination in the armed forces. On the other, it often becomes a comedic story of friendship and character development.

Although the latter might evolve into an enjoyable program by itself, the shortcoming to blend the contrasting elements into a satisfying narrative comes across as an unfortunate flaw. Boots started with something important to convey, however it ended up diminishing its impact.
