Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect responsible for some of the most iconic looks associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.

His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the pastel suits that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

His passing follows less than a month after he unveiled his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Pioneering Career

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he started his work in men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "genuine original," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.

During the nineties, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as various looks for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.

After a career spanning half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The industry mourns the loss to a true visionary whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
