Shoaib Bashir Earns Surprise Selection in English Ashes Team
The English team has chosen a twelve-player selection just 48 hours before the opening Test match, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a surprise place.
The 22-year-old’s selection indicates that the tourists will wait until the day of the initial match to decide whether Perth Stadium conditions favor a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spinner.
Both pace bowlers are part of the 12-man group, indicating there are no doubts about their fast bowler's condition.
The other seamers round out the bowling group, with Carse most likely to be omitted if Bashir enters the final team.
Ground Conditions Favor Pace Bowlers
Brendon McCullum had been expected to choose an pace-only lineup on a venue that has staged five past matches.
During these matches, the majority of dismissals have been taken by pace bowling, with only 40 to spin bowling.
Among these spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has taken the bulk, while overseas slow bowlers combined have just a handful.
At a venue known for its speed and carry, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, pledged that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a team relying on seamers is still the more likely decision.
Alternative Choices Weighed
Previously there was rumors that the all-rounder could be brought into the side to provide some spin while additionally bolstering the lower order.
But McCullum has opted to keep faith with Bashir, having stated previously that he would be his preferred slow bowler for the series.
In July, Nathan Lyon commented on Bashir as “decent,” saying that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still England’s best spinner.”
“It is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for people who haven’t done it in the previous in these conditions,” Lyon said of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't reveal my strategies so opponents perform and excel out here.”
