The most severe potential impacts of the climate emergency for the UK have been outlined by researchers, ranging from a scorching 4C jump in mean temperatures to a 6.5-foot rise in ocean levels. An alternative projection envisions a decline of 6C in temperatures following the collapse of crucial Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset agriculture and energy needs.

Possible Extremes, Not Forecasts

These consequences, some of which are linked to irreversible climate shifts, are viewed as unlikely but possible. The scientists stated that these models plugged a hole in planning that had rendered the UK ill-prepared for extreme outcomes.

"The severe weather events we have mapped should not be seen as certainties, but they are credible," stated Nigel Arnell who oversaw the study. "The nation has been formulating policy in the absence of the methods to plan for worst-case scenarios. We've now provided planners what they need to plan for future conditions they pray never occur, but can’t afford to ignore."

A Range of Harsh Climate Possibilities

Another collection of severe models sets out the projected severity of extreme weather between now and the end of the century. These suggest that thermometer readings could soar in some months by up to 6C higher than average, while rainfall could be 300% of normal levels.

The chance of the worst-case outcomes occurring cannot be precisely determined due to uncertainty about what steps will be taken to tackle global heating and how the Earth's systems will react. This research was likened to security threat evaluations or scenario planning for the banking sector.

Critical Scenario Highlights

  • Four-Degree Warming: Planetary heating exceeding 4C by 2100 could transpire if emissions cuts breaks down or if strong feedback loops including the tropical forests dying emit its vast reserves of carbon. This would cause intense and enduring heatwaves and water shortages plaguing the UK in summer.
  • Atlantic Current Collapse: A major ocean current, the North Atlantic current, is slowing down and becoming unstable due to global heating. A complete failure beginning in 2030 would lead to a six-degree temperature drop in the UK. "Agriculture would be severely challenged and water supplies would be drastically changed," noted the lead researcher.
  • Rapid Sea Level Rise: A surge of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could happen if glaciers in the polar regions disintegrate quickly, inundating seaside communities. Differing from the other scenarios, this risk is already recognized by planners.
  • Aerosol Effect: Temperatures could also be pushed higher by about 0.75C if airborne particulates is drastically reduced. This unexpected result occurs because aerosol particles from industrial activity block sunlight from warming the ground.

The worst-case scenarios could be applied to guide the development of critical national infrastructure, including housing developments, power generation facilities and flood defences. Knowledge about these future hazards could also accelerate the drive to reduce fossil fuel emissions.

The analysis formulated the worst-case scenarios using a combination of real-world events, digital projections and established principles. The possibilities omit potential global problems like the global food shortages and resource wars.

The research was commissioned as part of a national risk assessment framework. Earlier reports have warned that insufficient focus was being paid to high-consequence, low-probability risks.

Official experts has recommended that the UK needs to "prepare for two degrees of warming" and examine the threats for four degrees. Previous adaptation plans have been criticised as being "insufficient" by environmental groups.

A government spokesperson noted: "The climate emergency is at the center of this government’s agenda, both preparing for impacts and transitioning to a clean energy superpower. It is crucial that the UK is resilient for the effects."
