New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”
It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. And again, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”
Authorities issued video stills earlier this week of a man sought in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims according to reports.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday in the area between MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The assailant escaped.
Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a baby.
“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder issue that required surgery.
He signed with New York as a free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a key part of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a practice session on August 2 and was carted from the field.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while healing from his surgery.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he attends every game. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of UT in 2019. He later played for Arizona in last year and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
