Israeli citizens commemorate two-year anniversary of October 7th attacks as Palestinian peace negotiations advance
People have assembled throughout the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions continued in the neighboring country over an end to the war in Gaza.
The incident led to more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single deadliest day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel reacted by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as trustworthy by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"The violent opponents have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the leader remarked on that day.
He also promised to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the release of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will no longer create a risk to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The government authorities postponed formal commemorations until mid-October - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still occurred throughout the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the relatives of Israelis who died in the Hamas attack was held in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was televised throughout Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a moment of silence was held around the country.
Negotiation Talks in Egypt
Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams convened in the Egyptian tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of third-party negotiations to discuss the terms of the agreement.
A high-ranking Palestinian official familiar with the discussions indicated that an late session of indirect talks began at 19:00 Cairo time.
The source explained the earlier meeting concluded without significant progress, amid conflicting views over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not restart fighting after the opening period of the arrangement.
He noted that the talks are "challenging and have still not deliver any significant progress," but pointed out that mediators are striving to reduce the disparities between the conflicting groups.
Essential Issues in Talks
- A lasting halt to fighting
- The trade of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance deliveries
- After-conflict management of the territory
Citizen Feeling
In the city's Hostages Square earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling survived the assault on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were lost their lives and numerous more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - told: "No place seems like home any longer and until all the hostages are released not a single person will have peace of mind."
"After we see everybody home again, we can feel relief again. Then we can start to recover," she added.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people congregated to show their support for the families of the abducted. Israel states forty-eight stay in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be alive.
Protester a participant remarked: "It's necessary do any agreement needed for the captives to come back home. But we truly desire promises that we will be protected."
Research now regularly indicate that around seventy percent of Israelis want the conflict to finish in return for the freedom of the hostages.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the location of the music event, mourners assembled to pay their respects.
From there, the noise of aerial bombardments and explosions could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses said the heavy Israeli shelling continued.
In the main city, attacks were noted in the dawn of that day in the western neighborhood, area and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the east side district of that sector, as well the camp to the north-west.
"As the night arrives, the anxiety comes with it," displaced urban resident a local woman, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, described.
"We are terrified of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are lying together, holding each other, notably my youngest child who puts his face on me the entire evening."
"Every second we check the updates to see developments. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the fighting will resume to us."
Medical Emergency
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City reported it had received the corpses of several people by the midday, including several who died in an Israeli strike in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Nasser hospital in the south region of the city said another two victims had been delivered. One of them was killed by Israeli soldiers while looking for aid to the south region, health workers reported.
