Educator Slain and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Armed Clash at Nigerian School
Gun-wielding individuals have killed a teacher and abducted at least 25 students in an assault against a female high school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, according to police.
The criminal group stormed the comprehensive secondary school for girls in Kebbi State's Maga area at approximately 04:00 local time on Monday, officials stated.
The assailants "engaged police personnel on duty in a firefight" before scaling the perimeter fence and taking the pupils captive from their dormitory, according to a statement.
A school employee was killed while trying to protect the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now undergoing medical care.
Eyewitnesses described a large group of attackers, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who arrived firing sporadically to create fear.
Community members disclosed to media that the gunmen subsequently marched a contingent of young women into nearby bushland.
The police said they had deployed "supplementary tactical squads, alongside military personnel and local protection units" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and suspected escape routes.
