Critical Role Campaign 4 Reveals the Soldiers Group

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master the talented storyteller has kept fans guessing with rich lore, a diverse cast of heroes, and a thrilling plot showcasing angels, evil spirits, and sinister influences expanding in strength within the city.

Note: Key plot points for Episode 3 of the new season follow below.

The Soldiers Table Unveiled

Episode 3 ended with a huge suspense moment and revealed the initial group of adventurers who will branch out from the main group to undertake their separate journey, separate from the remaining groups.

This warrior group includes Teor (brought to life by Travis Willingham), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), the fierce warrior (Whitney), Wicander (the player), and Kattigan (the actor).

The Reason for Division

Considering an extensive roster, it was obvious from the start that maintaining everyone at a single group would be unworkable.

Hence, the opening chapters of the new season serve as an Introduction, intertwining the personal journeys before dividing into three separate parties: Warriors, Strategists, and Questers.

The Nature of the Soldiers Table

As described by Brennan Lee Mulligan, the warrior group is for adventurers who prefer a traditionally charged fight-heavy narrative style where diplomatic options are rare.

Initially, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander might seem unsuited, but the developments of episode 3 show why these particular heroes are best suited for the Soldiers table.

Motivations for Departure

To begin with, the party understands precisely where to go next after a violent initial meeting with the antagonists.

An old friend of Thjazi Fang—whose passing initiated the campaign’s events—exploited The Crow Keepers for his own means, entering the hidden lair, striking the rogue, and swiping all the magical artifacts to dispose of.

The traitor then settled his debts and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in Gormalay, Timmony, beyond Dol-Makjar, with Teor’s brother close behind.

Individual Reasons

Additionally, each adventurer has a specific drive to leave the city the metropolitan area:

  • Thimble, as the companion and closest confidant, desires vengeance.
  • Kattigan has experience in the region and warns that it is a hostile environment.
  • The warrior and The healer, having disobeyed his relatives’ demands to execute the fighter and instead saved him, have no other options.
  • Yet, their reputation as important members in the powerful family could enable the party reach places they normally couldn’t.
  • Furthermore, Teor pledged a life debt to The cleric for his rescue and will now go with him anywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

Lastly, all of them are hunted by the powers that rule Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making remaining behind too risky:

  • Thimble and The character are known criminals.
  • The strong figure and Wicander betrayed the influential house and the army of fiends they are partnered with.
  • The fighter is targeted for elimination by House Halovar.

This leaves them little choice but to head to the northern region in quest for Casimir.

Future Episodes

From episode three’s post-show segment, we learn that the Soldiers table will be absent the following episode, leaving the other eight cast members to round up the Explorers and Strategists parties.

Fans can expect learning which players will be where in the season’s last Overture episode, released on October 24.
